Are you looking for a fun, last-minute, in-the-hoop Valentine's Day project? Then you have come to the right place. In this post, I am going to take you step by step on how to create this candy heart coaster using my Conversation Heart Embroidery Design - and I'm giving you the design for FREE! So let's gather your supplies and get started on this Valentine's Day In the Hoop embroidery project! And the best part? You will only need a few supplies.
Supplies You Will Need:
An embroidery machine
Tear-away backing
Water Soluble Stabilizer (WSS)
Fabric squares - whatever color you choose. I'm using a color square from my fabric stash.
Batting square - I'm using a lightweight quilting batting. This will be your filling for the inside of the coaster.
Step 1 - Download Your Design
Access your design files below to download the design for the coaster and save it to your USB drive. We will be using the patch technique discussed in last weeks blog post to make a coaster (minus the Merrow edge). We'll finish the edge of the coaster with a satin stitch. The link includes one zipped folder with the design in the following file types: JEF, PES, VP3, HUS, XXX, EXP and DST.
Here is a video of how the design will stitch:
Step 2 - Load the Design
Load the design into your machine using your USB drive.
Step 3 - Hoop Your Materials
We are going to hoop one piece of tear-away backing on the bottom, covered with a piece of WSS on top. Hoop these together tightly.
Step 4 - Placement Stitch
We are ready to sew. First we are going to stich the placement stitch. This is going to serve as a guide for where to place our fabric.
Step 4 - Place Your Fabric
Remove your hoop from the embroidery machine. Cut your batting and your fabric square to fit inside your embroidery hoop. You can either float the fabric, or spray a light layer of spray adhesive to keep the fabric in place.
Step 5 - Tackdown Stitch
Next we are going to stitch the tackdown stitch. This running stitch will hold our fabric in place.
Step 6 - Trim
Using a pair of sharp scissors or appliqué scissors, trim away your excess fabric and batting as close to the tackdown stitch as possible. (Don't worry about the fuzzies - we can make them disappear with a lighter later.)
Step 7 - Stitch the Design
Now that your fabric is cleanly trimmed, it's time to stitch the satin stitch edge and the rest of the design.
Step 8 - Finishing Touches
Now that we are finished sewing the design, you can simply punch it out from the backing and we are finished! Burn the fuzzies around the edges for a s super-clean finish, and now you have a cute little coaster, just in time for Valentine's Day. I am putting this one on my daughter's bedside table.
Happy Stitching!
Beth
