ITH Candy Cane Christmas Ornament by Creatively Embroidery

Hello embroidery enthusiasts! I'm back with another In The Hoop (ITH) project and tutorial! I love creating new ITH project ideas, and I am excited to share this quick and easy project. Every year, I look forward to the weekend after Thanksgiving, when holiday decor is in full-swing in our home. This holiday season, I am looking forward to adding a little handmade cheer to our Christmas tree, so I am going to show you step-by-step how to create this In The Hoop ITH Candy Cane Christmas Ornament. This sweet little ornament is perfect gift for friends and family, or to freshen-up the assortment on your tree at home. So let's gather our supplies, and get started on this In the Hoop ITH Candy Cane Christmas Ornament.

Supplies You Will Need:
  1. An embroidery machine

  2. One sheet of tear-away backing

  3. 2 squares of faux leather in white.

  4. Thread colors: red, white, green, silver.

  5. 1 9” piece of 3/8" ribbon of your choice (I am using grosgrain)

  6. Painter's tape

  7. Scissors

Embroidery Supplies

Step 1 - Download Your Design

Access your design files below to download the Candy Cane Christmas Ornament design and save it to your USB drive. This design will fit in a 4x4 hoop. The link below includes one zipped folder with the design in the following file types: JEF, PES, VP3, HUS, XXX, EXP and DST.

Here is a video of how the design will stitch:

Step 2 - Load the Design

Load the design into your machine using your USB drive.

Step 3 - Hoop Your Materials

We are going to hoop one piece of faux leather on top of your sheet of tear-away backing. Make sure there are no wrinkles in your faux leather.

Step 4 - Stitch Your Design

We are ready to sew. First, we will stitch the ornament design. This design is four colors and will stop before we stitch the offset running stitch, giving us a chance to place our back piece of faux leather.

Step 5 - Place Your Ribbon

Remove your hoop from the embroidery machine and turn it over. Next, we are going to place your ribbon, which will be the ornament hangar for your project. This is probably the trickiest part of this very simple project. Make a loop with your ribbon, crossing the ends, and place over the back of the ornament design facing down. The crossed ends will go directly over the silver fill-stitch ornament topper part of the design. Place a piece of painter's tape toward the top of the frame, outside of the design.

Step 6 - Place Your Faux Leather Backing

Place your second piece of faux leather to cover the back of the design, using the painter's tape to secure the edges. I like to use painter's tape instead of masking tape because it doesn't leave any residue, but masking tape will also work.

Step 7 - Stitch the Offset Running Stitch

Place the frame back onto your embroidery machine and continue stitching. The design will finish by stitching an offset running stitch. I chose to stitch in red, but you could also stitch to match the color of your faux leather, or silver to match the ornament topper.

Step 8 - Remove Design from Hoop

Remove your design from the embroidery machine and remove the faux leather layers from the hoop.

Step 9 - Remove Tear-Away Stabilizer

Remove the excess tear-away stabilizer from in-between your faux leather layers.

Step 10 - Trim Your Design

Using a pair of sharp scissors, trim around your offset running stitch a few millimeters outside the stitches.

And there you have it! A quick and simple ornament, perfect to decorate your tree at home, or to give as a gift. A handmade ornament will be appreciated for years to come by friends and loved ones. I hope you enjoyed this project!

Happy Stitching!
