Hello, sewing friends! I'm back with another tutorial and project today. I would love to know how many of you have tried the fringe embroidery technique with your embroidery machine. Fringe embroidery is a fun way to add dimension and texture to your embroidery projects. Fringe embroidery designs are digitized in a way that allows the user to cut the threads free on the back of the embroidery design, then pull the threads through the fabric to create fringe on the front of the project. Today I am giving you a fringe embroidery design for FREE for you to try the fringe embroidery technique at home. So, let's get started!
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
Fringe embroidery design
Embroidery scissors with a curved tip
Seem ripper
Thread colors of your choice (3 shades of green for the watermelon rind, pink for the watermelon, and black for the seeds)
Step 2: Download your FREE Design
Download your FREE watermelon design below, that is specially digitized for fringe embroidery.
Here is a video of how the design will stitch:
Step 3: Load Your Design
Load your new design into your embroidery machine using a USB drive.
Step 4: Hoop Your Tear-Away Stabilizer and Fabric
Toady, I am stitching on a square of quilting-weight cotton, backed with medium-weight tear away stabilizer linked here. This design would look so sweet on a summer dress, onesie, t-shirt, sweatshirt, or a hundred other applications.
Step 5: Stitch the Design
Now that your fabric and stabilizer are hooped, we are ready to sew. This design includes a PDF worksheet, for those of you who prefer to use them. The design begins with stitching the pink of the watermelon, then the green stitches for the rind, and finally, the black seeds. When you finish stitching, your design should look like this:
Step 6: Clip the Fringe
Remove the design from your embroidery machine and flip the frame over, leaving the design on the frame. Your design back should look something like this:
Using your curved embroidery scissors or a seem ripper, clip the green thread near the top and bottom of the rind.
Be careful not to cut the dark green satin stitch.
Once all of the green threads are cut, the back of your design should look like this:
Step 7: Pull the Fringe Through the Fabric
Flip your design to the front. Using the tip of the seem ripper or your embroidery scissors, gently ruffle the edges of the rind, pulling the threads through the fabric, freeing the loose ends and creating the three-dimensional fringe effect. The triple-run stitch will hold your fringe in place.
And, there you have it! -- a sweet little fluffy, fringed watermelon slice to sweeten-up your summer embroidery!
Happy stitching!
Beth
